Security Council

Yesterday (20/October) the debate on the Security Council opened up with the issue regarding piracy in Somalia. At first the committee was divided into two different perspectives in how to approach the problem, one of them exposed by delegations such as Russia consisted of an international military intervention to fight insurgent groups on the country; on the other hand the delegation of the United Kingdom presented the alternative of giving an ultimatum to terrorists group in the area and then start a process of negotiation to prevent casualties, however one thing was clear if the pirates weren't willing to negotiate an immediate military intervention would follow.

After debating the committee steel on a medium point that would join both an military intervention and an ultimatum that would follow by an economic plan presented by the delegation of the United States, nonetheless there was still a problem expressed by the delegation of Somalia, the ethnic groups. If the committee proceed with an military intervention there would most likely be an internal conflict between Somali tribes because of the cultural difference between them. Considering factors such as the unstable government, the civil war, the tribes and the UNCLOS (United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea) the committee figure that the best way to end the issue is working hand in hand with the African Union, a continental union between the African countries, in an effective way ensuring the sovereignty of the country and the safety of the ethnic groups. The working paper is still in progress.
